Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)

Practical on-site ecological advice, helping you protect biodiversity and deliver high-quality ecological enhancements

What an Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) is and when you might need one

An Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW) is a suitably qualified ecological professional appointed to provide on-site ecological advice and supervision during potentially damaging construction, quarrying, and other development activities.

The primary purpose of an ECoW is to ensure that developers fulfil their legal and planning obligations. This includes overseeing works in accordance with relevant planning conditions and implementing agreed mitigation strategies, so that ecological risk is controlled within reasonable and practicable limits.

By doing so, an ECoW helps to avoid harm to protected species and habitats, ensures compliance throughout the project lifecycle, and maintains a robust due-diligence record to support compliance auditing and regulatory assurance.

How I approach the role of Ecological Clerk of Works (ECoW)

I work collaboratively with contractors, site managers, engineers, and project teams to provide practical, proportionate ecological advice that supports both compliance and project delivery.

My approach is solutions-focused, with clear communication, rapid problem-solving, and a strong on-site presence during sensitive operations. Wherever possible, I seek workable solutions that allow projects to proceed efficiently without compromising ecological safeguards.

I remain physically present and active on site, providing focused support so that teams can collaborate, resolve issues quickly, and reach the desired outcome in good time and with good humour.

Obviously, I cannot always say yes but if I cannot find a compromise that will achieve your objective without compromising conditioned ecological safeguards, it will not be for lack of effort or determination.

My specialist ECoW skills and experience

In accordance with CIEEM guidance, I am competent to undertake the role of an independent ECoW in situations where clear, effective communication is required at all levels. I bring the maturity and authority needed to command attention on site, manage group dynamics, and ensure that ecological compliance is delivered efficiently and professionally.

I am also experienced in finding practical, workable solutions that—where possible—keep contractors and machinery moving while safeguarding ecological objectives. I have a reputation as a field facilitator, encouraging everyone involved to work together effectively towards our shared goal: development without damage.

I bring extensive practical field experience and a strong understanding of: a) protected species ecology; b) habitat management; c) wildlife legislation and licensing; d) ecological mitigation techniques; e) planning policy; and, e) ecological compliance monitoring.

I am experienced in technically challenging environments, including subterranean sites, and can: 1) write and deliver toolbox talks; 2) confidently control and supervise sensitive works; 3) maintain accurate site records; 4) prepare due-diligence reports for compliance auditing; and, 5) respond calmly and confidently to unexpected ecological issues on site.

What you can expect from me as your EcOW

You can expect a lot of questions so I understand the project aims and the daily tasks.

You can expect triage of risk so you know where and when you need me, and where and when you don’t.

You can expect clear instructions and full justification every time.

When I am on site I don’t stand back and I don’t stand idle. You can expect energy, quick-thinking, and the ability to think outside the box and to develop mitigation ‘on the hoof’. At the same time, a strong enough personality to stop anyone from doing something that they might later regret.

If you are looking for clear, sensible advice in plain English, fairly priced and supported on the ground throughout your project, please do contact me.
